About Nathan Fields: A Creative Path From Legos to Film Scores
I’ve worn a lot of hats in this industry: composer, producer, sound designer, entrepreneur, DJ. But at the core of it all is one thing—creating. It’s the thread that’s run through everything I’ve done, from building with Legos as a kid to producing music that ends up in trailers for some of the biggest films in the world.
It started with guitar. I was 13, and by 15, playing in what I like to call an unofficial Led Zeppelin cover band (basically just jamming with some friends). That led to a melodic death metal project in my mid-teens. Then, around 17, I heard dubstep for the first time. That moment, helped along by a bit of psychedelic exploration, completely changed my path. I dove into music production, left the band world behind, and was off to the races on a new solo journey. Dubstep became everything for a while. It consumed me and shaped how I hear and build music to this day.
A few years later, through a strange connection involving my dad, a woman he met in Peru, and an ayahuasca ceremony in the Amazon, I was introduced to my now business partner, Geoff. That conversation was the entry point into the trailer music world. Check out this blog for more on that. From there, I began writing cues for film campaigns, which eventually led to launching my own company, Rareform Audio. We quickly expanded our reach and acquired a partnership stake in Black Sheep Music. Under the Rareform umbrella, I took on a creative leadership role at Black Sheep, overseeing music direction and driving growth on all fronts.
Today, my work spans original music, trailer scoring, sound design, and creative direction. I run the day-to-day as CEO of Rareform Audio, lead music and growth strategy at Black Sheep Music, and stay deeply involved in the creative process, from building tracks to building teams.
Across more than 400 film trailers, TV shows, ads, and games, I’ve worked on campaigns for projects like Deadpool & Wolverine, Fast X, Minions, Marvel’s Thunderbolts, and Call of Duty, as well as with brands like Hasbro Games, Toyota, Gatorade, Genesis, and Google. These aren’t just credits. They’re moments where the sound had to tell a story. Storytelling and building worlds is what keeps me inspired.
I used to think creativity was just about making music, and business lived somewhere else entirely. But over time, I realized that running a company is one of the most creative things you can do. Designing the ecosystem that makes the art possible, shaping the systems and spaces that support the work, it’s all part of the same creative path. And I genuinely love every part of that journey.
That includes launching artist collaborations, expanding a growing production music catalog, creating curated sound packs, and mentoring a roster of emerging talent. Whether it's composing a cue, developing a brand, or building a company, it all comes from the same place: the drive to create and keep evolving.
Thx for tuning in,
Nathan
